Fall Foliage Getaways: New England, the Smokies, and a Michigan Secret or Two

There's a short, glorious window every autumn when the leaves turn all at once and the light goes golden. The trick is being in the right place at the right moment — and that's where a little advisor planning goes a long way.

New England: the classic peak-color trip

Nothing beats a New England leaf-peeping loop through Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Color usually peaks from the last week of September in the northern mountains down through mid-October along the coast. Because peak moves south (and downhill) as the weeks go on, timing is everything.

A few things we help our travelers get right:

• Book lodging early. Inns in towns like Stowe and Woodstock sell out months ahead for peak weekends.
• Drive the scenic byways — Vermont's Route 100, the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire — mid-week to dodge the crowds.
• Consider a fall foliage cruise. American Cruise Lines and others sail New England and the St. Lawrence in autumn, so you wake up to color without repacking every night.

The Great Smoky Mountains: color that lingers

If you can't get away until late October or even early November, the Smokies are your friend. Elevation stretches the season out for weeks — the high peaks turn first, the valleys around Gatlinburg last. It's an easier, more relaxed trip than New England, and wonderful for families who want hiking, cozy cabins, and a slower pace.

A Michigan secret or two

Here in the Thumb, we don't have to travel far for our own color. The drive up M-25 along Lake Huron, Port Crescent State Park, and the back roads around the Cass River light up beautifully in early-to-mid October. It makes a lovely warm-up (or a whole weekend) before a bigger trip.

For a longer Michigan autumn, we love pointing folks toward the Tunnel of Trees near Harbor Springs and the color up around the Straits — both stunning, and both easy to fold into a road-trip itinerary.
